Pursue your passion for education and start inspiring students in grades 6 through 12 with Mercer University’s Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) in Secondary Education degree. The B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education program is taught within a cohort model to emphasize community and collaboration. You will work closely with faculty to gain an academic perspective that values the individual and authentic worth of each student through the inclusive lens of the regular classroom.

Your Mercer Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education degree experience
Earning a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education at Mercer while managing other priorities is possible. Mercer’s program is flexible and many of our students continue working while earning their degree.
Students pursue the B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education through a blended combination of online and in-person meetings at Mercer’s Atlanta, Douglas County, Henry County, or Macon locations.
- The majority of each course is completed through both synchronous and asynchronous online instruction, and students only attend class in person twice per course.
- Most students register for two courses per eight-week session.
- Sessions begin five times per year, in January, March, May, August, and October.

Gain experience in the classroom
Students in the B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education program gain hands-on field experiences in public school classrooms in the local community. Throughout the secondary education degree program, students complete a variety of experiences, including pre-practicum, professional practicum, and student teaching. Field experiences are coordinated through the Office of Field Placement.
Explore teacher candidacy
During sophomore year, students apply for full admission to teacher candidacy to gain eligibility to enroll in junior year courses. Admission criteria include submitting the online application for teacher candidacy, passing the Georgia Educator Ethics assessment, maintaining a 2.5 GPA, and more. Effective July 1, 2022, students are no longer required to take the GACE Program Admission assessment. Learn more.
