M.A.T. in Elementary Education Program Requirements

Foundational Classes (0–9 hours)

Foundation courses may be waived with approved undergraduate or graduate equivalent classes.

Methods Classes (9 hours)

EMAT 604 Planning for Instruction and Assessment in Elementary Education
EMAT 614 Assessment of Teaching and Learning in Elementary Education
EMAT 621 Curriculum and Instruction in Elementary Education

Content Area Classes (15 hours)

EMAT 636 Essential Elements of Elementary Literacy Education
EMAT 637 Creating an Elementary Literate Environment Across Content Areas
EMAT 665 Teaching Mathematics in Elementary Education
EMAT 671 Teaching of Science and Health in Elementary Education
EMAT 681 Social Studies in a Multicultural World for Elementary Education

Field Experiences (13 hours)

EMAT 601 Initial Field Experience (Pre-Requisite)
EMAT 608/609 Practicum/Mentored Practicum
EMAT 611/612 Student Teaching/Internship

All Elementary Education candidates must have field experiences in each of the following grade clusters: Pre K-K, 1-3, and 4-5.

Total degree requirements: 37 hours

Prior to program completion, candidates must take the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) Content Assessment for Elementary Education.

To be eligible for initial teacher certification, the candidate must successfully complete all required classes and field experiences with a grade of B or better and complete portfolio requirements. Students must also pass the appropriate Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) required GACE Content Assessments and the GACE Educator Ethics Assessment.
