Top Online Colleges Badge EndorsementsEndorsements are training for certified teachers who want to add expertise in specific areas. Students who hold a master's degree in an approved content area from a regionally-accredited institution may apply for an endorsement program. 

NOTE: Endorsement courses are fully online; however, candidates will be required to complete a field-based component.

The Autism endorsement is available to certified teachers who hold a valid Level 4 teaching certificate. Successful completion of the three course sequence with a GPA of at least 3.0 and with no grade below B will lead to eligibility for an in-field Autism Endorsement. This endorsement will provide the certified teacher with knowledge and competencies to work with students on the autism spectrum. 

The courses required for the endorsement are: 
  • EDUC 658. Development and Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders (3 hours)
  • EDUC 659 Behavior Management and Applied Behavior Techniques for Autism Spectrum Disorders (3 hours) 
  • EDUC 660. Learning Environment, Instruction and Assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorders (3 hours)

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants to the Autism Endorsement program may choose to enter the program as a non-degree, post-baccalaureate student or they may choose to incorporate the endorsement classes within one of the graduate degree programs, either the M.Ed. in early Childhood Education or the Ed.S. in Early Childhood Education. Enrollment in either M.Ed. or EdS program requires applicants hold or be eligible for an induction level certificate or higher in an appropriate field (such as Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Education/Special Education, or Birth-Kindergarten).

  • Application fee — Please include the $25 application fee ($50 for international applicants) in the form of a check or money order made payable to Mercer University. Do not send cash. For all K-5 Math Endorsement applicants, the following admission criteria apply:
  • Level 4 certificate in Early Childhood Education, Middle Grades Math (4-8), Special Education/General Curriculum (P-5), or other Special Education fields with a core academic content concentration in math.
  • A minimum of one year of certified teaching experience.
  • A minimum grade of C in at least two math content courses in undergraduate or graduate school.

For all K-5 Science Endorsement applicants, the following admission criteria apply:

  1. Have a minimum of one (1) year of teaching experience;
  2. Hold a level four (4) or higher renewable professional certificate in one or more of the following fields:

a. Early Childhood Education; Middle Grades Science; or Special Education General Curriculum/Early Childhood Education; or

b. Any of the following fields combined with a core academic content concentration in science: Special Education General Curriculum; Special Education Adapted Curriculum; Behavior Disorders; Learning Disabilities; Deaf Education; Physical and Health Disabilities; Visual Impairment; or Gifted; and

  1. Complete other requirements outlined in GaPSC Rule 505-2-.14 ENDORSEMENTS.

(2) Salary Stipend. Certified educators holding the K-5 Science Endorsement and teaching at least one science course in grades K through 5 will be eligible to earn salary incentives when funded by the General Assembly.

  1. The previously existing Early Childhood Science Endorsement, valid for grades P-5, shall continue to be listed on the certificate of educators who have been issued it prior to June 30, 2010. However, that P-5 endorsement does not qualify for a salary stipend, as required by HB 280. Educators holding the Early Childhood Science Endorsement may add the new K-5 Science endorsement upon recommendation by a GaPSC-approved K-5 Science Endorsement program provider.

(3) In-Field Statement (See GaPSC Rule 505-2-.40 IN-FIELD ASSIGNMENT). An individual with the K-5 Science Endorsement has strengthened and enhanced competency levels in science content and instruction for K-5 science. The endorsement will apply only to the grade levels of the base teaching certificate within the K-5 range.

The ESOL endorsement is available to certified teachers who are seeking or hold a valid Level 4 teaching certificate in any field. Successful completion of the three-course sequence will lead to eligibility for an in-field endorsement. The ESOL endorsement sequence may be completed in a non-degree status or as electives within a teacher preparation program.

The Reading Endorsement is available to any teacher holding a valid Level 4 teaching certificate in any field. Successful completion of the three-course sequence of study will lead to eligibility for an in-field endorsement in reading and will provide the certified teacher with strengthened and enhanced competencies for teaching reading and literacy at the prerequisite certification level. 

The courses required for the endorsement are: 
  • EDUC 687: Research & Best Practices in ECE Reading (for ECE-certified teachers) or EDUC 688: Research & Best Practices in Content Area Literacy (for MGE- or SEC-certified teachers)
  • EDUC 647: Preventing, Diagnosing, and Correcting Literacy Problems
  • EDUC 662: Clinical Practicum

The Tift College of Education offers an endorsement in STEM for certified teachers who hold a valid Level 4 teaching certificate. Successful completion of the three-course sequence with (a no grade below B) will lead to eligibility for an in-field STEM Endorsement. Candidates who complete this course will achieve a deeper understanding of applied STEM processes as well as engage in field experience.
