Biography

Dr. Sybil Keesbury is an associate professor at the Tift College of Education. Her area of specialty is special education, with a focus on Autism Spectrum Disorders and Behavioral Disorders.  Prior to teaching at Mercer University she taught special education in the public schools of North Carolina.  She is certified in Preschool Handicap Birth – Age 9, Emotional and Behavior Disorders K-12, as well as National Board Certified Exceptional Needs Specialist Early Childhood through Young Adult.

Teaching

Dr. Keesbury primarily teaches in the Holistic Child program, and her courses focus predominantly in special education.  She also serves as a university liaison in elementary school settings and is a university supervisor for teacher candidates during their clinical field placements.  In addition, she serves on dissertation committees for the Ph.D. program.  As a former classroom teacher, Dr. Keesbury’s background is in early childhood special education birth-age 9.

Scholarship

Dr. Keesbury’s work has been published in regional and national peer-reviewed journals.  In addition, she regularly presents research at national and international conferences.  Her goal is to link her teaching and scholarship together, and she is passionate about preparing pre-service teachers for the field of education.  Therefore, her research centers on addressing needs of teacher candidates.

Service

Dr. Keesbury consistently provides service to the Tift College of Education, Mercer University and local communities.  She advises two student philanthropy groups as well as works with local schools as a liaison for teacher candidate placements.  One of the best service events that Dr. Keesbury helps spear head is Go Baby Go, where modified ride on cars are customized for local children with disabilities.
