M.Ed. Secondary Education

The 30-semester hour M.Ed. Secondary Education program is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of certified teachers in grades 6-12. Completion of the planned program (including the prerequisite Level 4 certificate) and a passing score on the GACE Content Assessment for Reading leads to eligibility for master's level (Level 5) certification in Reading by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

The program offers a wide scope of advanced course content intended to expand levels of knowledge, skills, and dispositions in secondary level teachers. Students are able to focus in a content area in the following subject areas:

  • Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Science


Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to: 

  • Understand key concepts and organization of secondary level education.
  • Understand how culture, students’ approaches to learning, and exceptionalities impact students
  • Create learning experiences that make content meaningful for students in grades 6-12 
  • Understand, design, and implement appropriate formal and informal assessment tools


Students are admitted three times per year for the Fall (August), Spring (January) and Summer (May) terms. The 16-month program is offered on the Atlanta campus in an in-class, face-to-face format. Students attend class on a year-round calendar. Each class is delivered in 16-week semesters.
