Ed.S. Early Childhood Education

The Specialist in Education in Early Childhood Education is a fully online program designed for those who are currently certified at the master’s level and who are seeking the opportunity to grow and develop professionally as transforming educators. Throughout the program students will gain a greater depth of knowledge relating to issues of diversity, curriculum assessment and development, theory and research, and pedagogy. Students will also develop expertise in written and oral communication skills which will prepare them to advocate more effectively for young children, their families, and the community.

Successful completion of the program will lead to eligibility for an upgrade of the candidate’s teaching certification to a Level 6 certificate by the Georgia Professional Standards Committee.  As part of the program, students also have the option to earn a GaPSC approved endorsement in Reading, Math ECE (K-5), Science ECE (K-5), or ESOL. 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the program, students will have a greater depth and understanding: 

  • In your practice and thus to become an accomplished teacher
  • Of knowledge relating to issues of diversity, assessment, curriculum development, theory and research, instructional technology, content, and pedagogy
  • Of expertise in written and oral communication skills, enabling more effective advocacy for young children, their families, and the community
  • Of knowledge of professional resources, inquiry, and research methods to grow professionally and gain advanced knowledge to support the practice of teaching and life long learning

PROGRAM DELIVERY MODEL

Students are admitted three times a year for the Fall (August), Spring (January) and Summer (May) terms.  Class instruction is delivered fully-online. Students have the opportunity to schedule in-person meetings that can be scheduled at one of Mercer’s various locations or via phone offering students greater flexibility. Online components are completed in Blackboard, Mercer’s course management system.
